Justin Scott Hartley, who was born 29 January 1977, is an American actor. He is known for his television roles which include the following roles:
- Fox Crane on the daytime soap opera Passions (between 2002 and 2006),
- Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on the television series Smallville (between 2006 and 2011), and
- Adam Newman on the soap opera The Young and the Restless (between 2014 and 2016) which earned him an Emmy nomination.
In addition, Hartley appeared as the regular character, Patrick Osbourne, in a season of the highly acclaimed television series Revenge. Most possibly his most famous role from 2016 to 2022, Hartley starred as Kevin Pearson in the drama series This Is Us. He was voted for a Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Critics’ Choice Television Award.
His Early Life
Born in Knoxville, Illinois, and raised in Orland Park, Illinois, Hartley had a passion for bringing characters to life at a very early age and began to take acting quite seriously when he got to college. He attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in History and Theatre.
It was perhaps at Carbondale that he enrolled in a class called Interpretation of Children’s Literature, hoping to get good grades without much difficulty. What Hartley did not realise is that it was really an acting class requiring oral interpretation. Even though he was frightened at first, Hartley soon began to love it.
After graduation, Hartley decided to make the move to Los Angeles, packing up his truck with no money or a job, to try his hand at the entertainment industry. For two years, he worked as a waiter in a Los Angeles restaurant, learning how things were done and keeping his hope high.
When His Acting Career Took Off
In December 2002, Hartley was hired to play the role of a regular series part Nicholas Foxworth ‘Fox’ Crane in the daytime soap opera, Passions. He played the part till February 2006.
While Passion did not do exceptionally well in the American daytime rating, his work garnered attention, getting two Soap Opera Digest Awards nods for his role in the Passions. In 2005, Hartley got his next job, starring in movies such as Joe in Race You to the Bottom.
In 2006, when the biggest online casino South Africa sites were starting to emerge, Hartley was capped to play Oliver Queen / Green Arrow in Smallville. He appeared in a recurrent role in the sixth and seventh season as well as in the major role in the next three, covering a grand total of 72 episodes until May 2011. At the same time, Hartley continued to appear in other productions.
Between 2008 and 2009, Hartley appeared in three movies: Red Canyon, Spring Breakdown, and A Way with Murder. In addition, he appeared as Nick Korda in 12 episodes of the web series, Gemini Division and stared as Dan Lane in the television film, MegaFault.
His Personal Life
In 2003, Hartley started dating his Passions co-star Lindsay Korman. After six months, the two got engaged. They got married on 1 May 2004 and on 3 July 2004 Korman gave birth to their daughter. On 6 May 2012, after almost 10 years of marriage, it was announced that Korman had filed for divorce.
In January 2014, it was confirmed that Chrishell Stause and Hartley were dating, and in July 2016, they announced their engagement. They got married on 28 October 2017 but Hartley filed for divorce a few years later, and it was finalised on 22 February 2021.
Hartley married Sofia Pernas, his The Young and the Restless co-star, in March 2021.
