His Early Life
Born in Knoxville, Illinois, and raised in Orland Park, Illinois, Hartley had a passion for bringing characters to life at a very early age and began to take acting quite seriously when he got to college. He attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in History and Theatre.
It was perhaps at Carbondale that he enrolled in a class called Interpretation of Children’s Literature, hoping to get good grades without much difficulty. What Hartley did not realise is that it was really an acting class requiring oral interpretation. Even though he was frightened at first, Hartley soon began to love it.
After graduation, Hartley decided to make the move to Los Angeles, packing up his truck with no money or a job, to try his hand at the entertainment industry. For two years, he worked as a waiter in a Los Angeles restaurant, learning how things were done and keeping his hope high.
